Family of Innocent Victim killed by police speak out

Earlier this month, Monterey Park police responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon and a man with a knife in an apartment in the 900 block of Palm Avenue. Police reported that two men came running toward them, which caused the officers to mistake who the suspect and victim were. They opened fire, shooting and killing John Winkler, who was only 30 years old. Winkler’s family is still trying to make sense of his death and they are asking for an explanation from authorities. Police are currently conducting an investigation of the whole incident to figure out what exactly occurred on that tragic night. Winkler worked for comedy central as a staffer and is remembered as a thoughtful and giving man with a kind hears. Winkler was one of three men who were held hostage inside the apartment at knifepoint. The suspect was identified as Alexander McDonald who allegedly stabbed and fought the hostages until deputies arrived. McDonald has been charged with murder and is awaiting trial at the Monterey Park Jail.
